Improving Concentration, Naturally

University researchers in Japan found that diffusing certain aromas in an office environment dramatically improved mental accuracy and concentration. 

Diffusing Lemon essential oil resulted in 54 percent fewer errors, Jasmine 33 percent fewer errors, and Lavender - 20 percent fewer errors.  When aromas were diffused during test taking, scores increased by as much as 50 percent!

Since Jasmine is one of the most expensive oils there is, you may want to choose to diffuse Lemon if improved concentration is your primary goal.  However, Jasmine has many other important properties as well.  

Jasmine has been nicknamed as the "queen of the night" and "moonlight of the grove." For centuries, women have treasured jasmine for its beautiful, seductive fragrance. 

Like all blossom oils, it has a strong affinity for facial skin.  It has been used for thousands of years in skin care, cosmetics and perfumes. It is toning and antiseptic, and has a relaxing, aphrodisiac scent.  

A bath with Jasmine oil lets you forget aggravation, stress, anger, nervousness, and worries.  And it is particularly suited for treating dry, sensitive, and sore skin and has a soothing effect on skin infections.

P. S.  Did you know that one pound of Jasmine oil requires about 1,000 pounds of jasmine or 3.6 million fresh, unpacked blossoms? The blossoms must be collected before sunrise, or much of the fragrance will have evaporated. The quality of the blossoms may also be compromised if they are crushed.

P.P.S. A single pound of pure jasmine oil may cost between $1,200 and $4,500. In contrast, synthetic jasmine oils can be obtained for $3.50 per pound.  Of course, they do not possess the same therapeutic qualities as the pure oil.

Nourish Your Feminine Side with Essential Oils

Essential oils are among nature’s most powerful healing agents.  Many have powerful antibacterial and antiviral qualities.  Most are cleansing and detoxifying, some are immune-stimulating and anti-tumorous, and others – emotionally uplifting and spiritually elevating.  

Pure, therapeutic-grade oils can also be among the most powerful tool in your natural skin-care arsenal.  Legendary beauties such as Cleopatra used the oils to enhance and preserve their beauty.  And thanks to the growing body of research, we now better understand how they work.

For one thing, essential oils are natural rejuvenating agents.  They promote the delivery of oxygen to the cells and assist in eliminating waste matter, thus stimulating cell renewal.  They heal, cleanse and revitalize the tissues and prevent or soothe irritations and infections.  And the best part is that they work both internally and externally, making sure that your outward beauty is supported by optimal health from within.

It is also believed to improve a woman’s libido. 

Ylang ylang, which means “flower of flowers,” is another oil that has been women’s favorite since  ancient    times. Its blossoms have been used to cover the beds of newlywed couples on their wedding night.  Ylang ylang balances male-female energies, enhances spiritual attunement, combats anger, low self-esteem, and restores confidence and peace.

Antibacterial Essential Oils and What to Do if You are Traveling to Europe this Month

I was sidetracked this morning with questions from a couple of friends traveling to Europe about how they could protect themselves from the e-coli outbreak.   I shared a couple of ideas with them and thought that others might find them useful as well. 

 

My suggestions are based on what we know about general antibiotic properties of therapeutic-grade essential oils.  The oils I work with have been tested against a number of bacterial strains, with positive results.   They may or may not have been tested against this particular strain, which seems to be particularly deadly.   

 

So don't take my recommendations and place yourself in harm's way thinking that you've got the magic bullet.  However, if you use common sense along with a couple of essential oils that have been shown to be potent general antibiotics, you may increase your chances of staying healthy and traveling safely. 

 

 

1.  Wash Your Hands, Get Enough Sleep, and Keep the Stress at Bay

 

First - the basics.  Wash your hands.  Also wash the fruits and vegetables that you eat on your trip.    

Also:  do what you can to boost your immune system.  Our immune systems are actually designed to deal with pathological agents pretty effectively on their own - but not if they are weakened.  

 

Stress suppresses our immune system on the physiological level.  So does lack of sleep.  So keep at least those two factors in check, and you'll go a long way toward staying healthy.     

 

    

2.  Essential Oils as Nature's General Antibiotics

 

This is a quick recap for those of you who haven't heard me talk about this before. If you know this stuff, scroll down to the part with specific suggestions. 

 

Essential oils have been used against bacteria (as well as viruses) for thousands of years.  Today we know that essential oils may actually in many ways be more potent than synthetic antibiotics.  

 

One reason is their complex chemistry. Synthetic antibiotics have specific chemical makeup, which means that every pill of a particular antibiotic is identical to the next. (The so-called "pharmacological purity" principle.)    This has many pluses, but it also makes it easy for bacteria to recognize the structure and adapt to it.  

 

Because essential oils come from plants, their chemical make-up is significantly more complex.  It takes tons and tons of plant material to produce a bottle of an essential oil.  And just as no individual plant is exactly the same as the next, no bottle of essential oil is exactly the same.  This makes for unpredictable and pretty much endless variations in their structure.  This complexity makes it hard for bacteria to adapt to.   

 

In addition, synthetic antibiotics are manufactured to target specific strains of bacteria.  If conventional medicine does not have an antibiotic for a specific bacteria, there is not much it can do. Essential oils, on the other hand, because of their complex structure, can be effective against multiple strains of bacteria.  They are nature's general antibiotics.   

 

Finally, unlike synthetic antibiotics, essential oils target "bad" bacteria and leave the "good" ones alone.  By doing that, they generally support our immune system, rather than weakening it further, as is the case with synthetic antibiotics.    

 

There are multiple studies that demonstrate essential oils' antibacterial effectiveness.  For example, essential oils of lemongrass and a blend of Young Lving eucalyptus oils known as RC have been shown in studies to kill antibiotic resistant bacteria MRSA (the so-called "superbug") and a strain of e-coli within 2 minutes.    

 

3. What I Would Do If I Were Traveling to Europe

 

I would get the following:

 

• RC - the Young Living Eucalyptus blend I mentioned above
• Lemongrass - see above 
• Thieves oil blend - a general antibiotic blend, which is also has lots of other properties. (See here for more info.) 
• Inner Defense capsules
• Travel Diffuser

 

Here's how you can use them:  

 

• Rub RC and Thieves and a couple drops of Lemongrass, into your feet before going to bed (use all three together or alternate on different nights).
• Add Thieves to your drinking water any time you drink anything during the trip.   
• Rub any of the three oils (or all of them) on your chest and neck (under the jaw) a few times throughout the day.  
• Take 2 Inner Defense caps per day. Inner Defense is basically Thieves in an enteric capsule, which means that it opens up in your intestines rather than your stomach, so the oils go where they need to without being affected by stomach acids.  The normal recommendation to keep your immune system strong is to take 1 per day.  In this case, I would take 2 caps per day to be on the safe side.    
• Use the Travel Diffuser to diffuse the oils in your hotel room to clear the air and cut off one more possible route for infection.

As always, this holds true only for the particular brand of oils I work with.  Not all oils out on the market can be taken internally, and not all can be used safely on the skin.  Young Living conducts extensive research on its oils.  Exercise caution if working with other brands.

7 Steps to Reduce Stress in Your Life— And Feel More Energetic and Connected

We are a nation of highly stressed-out people. We can see signs of stress in others, and recognize them in ourselves: there is that sense of exhaustion (“I’m wiped out!”), taut facial muscles, dry skin, and irritability; there may be heart palpitations or the sinking feeling in our stomach or the sense that we are drowning in an endless sea of chores and obligations.

Stress is hard to define in scientific terms, and yet it is one of the biggest culprits in our worsening national health crisis. An estimated 90 percent of all primary doctor visits are said to be related to stress. Chronic stress disrupts nearly every system in your body and is considered to be a precursor to such serious conditions as type 2 diabetes, depression, weight-gain, back pain, and heart disease. At work, it leads to productivity losses and growing medical costs.

The problem is that sometimes reducing stress seems as stressful as, well, the very problem that had caused the stress in the first place. I regularly hear this from women for whom scheduling a 90-minute relaxation appointment with me is tantamount to performing a feat of organizational genius.

But the truth is that you can find your way to reducing stress without joining an ashram, blowing three months’ rent on a spa vacation or passing up on a new, exciting project at work. When it comes to stress reduction, you can do a lot in small increments – and on a small budget.

Here are some strategies that you can take to the office, on a business trip, or anywhere else your busy life happens to take you. The results to look for are more energy, sharper focus, a greater sense of peace and equanimity and, ultimately, better health.

Can Energy Medicine Help with Menstrual Problems?

I recently worked with a client who was experiencing symptoms of a post-traumatic stress disorder  (PTSD)  as a result of several highly stressful events in her life.  On top of that, she had suffered a miscarriage, and after several months, her period had not yet returned.  Memories of the traumatic events were intruding into her daily life.  When she came to me, she hoped that she might achieve a measure of peace with the events and, at a minimum, restore hope that one day she might have a child.

We began the session using an energy medicine technique that I have found to be exceptionally helpful when dealing with traumatic memories.  It involves bilateral stimulation of the brain and is similar, in some aspects, to the well-understood psychotherapeutic methodology known as EMDR.  Specifically, it involves tracing a figure eight ("infinity sign") in front of the client and asking her to follow the figure with her eyes while bringing a specific painful memory to her mind. 

After 15 minutes or so, the client reported, with surprise, that the painful memory we chose to work on didn't seem so painful anymore.  We then decided to proceed with the energy balancing session, in which she was able to relax on the treatment table while I balanced and cleared her energy field.

At the end of the session she reported feeling relaxed and said that an image came to her during the session - an image of herself walking through the door of her home, pregnant.  The image arose in her mind spontaneously, without conscious effort on her part.  It was very positive, and it gave her hope.

The next day I received the following email from her:

"I wanted to thank you for our session. I went home feeling at peace. I also wanted to tell you that I got my period the next day!!! How weird?! That was a major concern for me since the miscarriage. It was like the peace I felt allowed for me to get it."

I was happy to read this.  And I wasn't surprised.  Over the years, I've had patients who reported a shift to the better in their menstrual cycle as a result of our working together on the energetic level.  One client reported that, even though we were addressing other issues, one of the unintended benefits of our work was that her cycle became regular - for the first time in years.  Another mentioned, after our very first session together, that her next period was less painful than usual.

There are multiple studies that demonstrate that energy medicine creates specific physiological responses.   Energy work creates the well-understood and well-documented physiological response in the body known as the relaxation response.  The beauty of this response is that it allows the body to bring itself back into balance - something that the body is programmed to do naturally anyway and alwasy tries to do when this balance is off.  In other words, energy work taps into the body's own wisdom, allowing its own natural self-healing mechanisms to kick in.

In addition, with all three of these clients I had used a specific Healing Touch technique that specifically targets the parts of the brain that are directly involved with regulating our endocrine system - the hypothalamus, pituitary, and pineal glands.  This means that, even as we worked on something else altgoether, we supported the systems that were involved with these women's hormonal balance, and these systems fixed themselves.

All of these cases demonstrate something really important about energy medicine.  It addresses the body in a holistic, integrated way that includes your physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being.  The healing of one part of your system may provide it with just enough extra resources to heal others as well.

That is why, in energy medicine, we believe that our clients are active participants in their healing.  We also believe that the real healing comes from the cooperation between the client and the practitioner, rather than exclusively through some superior powers and expertise of the practitioner.

What all of these clients had in common was that they fully embraced the energy medicine approach and allowed themselves to become fully engaged in it.  And that allowed us, together, to create the best possible outcome for them.

Lauren brings a passion for healing and a compassion to her work and clients through her life experience as a BreathWork therapist, businessperson, wife, mother, photojournalist, nonprofit advocate and a past sufferer of chronic pain. In addition to 10 years of BreathWork training, Lauren holds an MA in Journalism from the University of Missouri and a BA in Business from Syracuse University.

Izabella Tabarovsky, MA/HTCP,  is a Clinical Aromatherapist, Energy Worker, Health and Wellness Consultant, and Life Path / Career Path Coach.  She is a founding partner at Soapstone Integrative Health Associates and is on staff at the Washington Cancer Institute.   She is a Healing Touch Certified Practitioner, a Myers-Briggs counselor and has been trained in the Enneagram and other methods integrating Western psychology with the Eastern view of the body.  She brings these experiences together to create a holistic healing experience for her clients.  She is passionate about sharing information about the many benefits of aromatherapy, energy balancing, and other holistic approaches to health and well-being, and teaches frequently throughout the greater Washington, DC area and nationally.  Izabella holds an MA from Harvard University and a BA from University of Colorado.
